September - 2011 AO-51 Schedule

It is with a heavy heart I report that AO-51 has ceased transmission and is not responding to commands. The last telemetry data indicated that the third of six batteries was approaching failure to short, and observations indicate the voltage from three cells is insufficient to power the UHF transmitters. The IHU may continue to be operative. Initial tests with the S band transmitter were also not positive, although more attempts are in order. We have tried leaving the satellite in an expected state where if voltages climb high enough, the 435.150 transmitter may possibly be heard.

The command team will regularly attempt communications with the satellite over the coming months (and years). There is always the possibility that a cell will open and we could once again talk to our friend while illuminated. Thanks to all who helped fund, design, build, launch, command, and operate AO-51. It's 7 year mission has been extraordinary. Please support AMSAT's Fox-1 project, and other AMSAT projects worldwide with your time and money.

UPDATE: 28-11-2011

After much trial and error, we have found a "sweet spot" where AO-51 will stay operational through eclipse for the time being. Cell 3 is a dead short, and cell 2 now goes to zero in eclipse also. It's amazing the satellite will operate on 2/3rds the designed voltage input!

How long AO-51 can be kept operational is anyone's guess. By the end of this year, eclipses will be headed for 30 minutes long. It is unlikely it will continue to operate as-is at that point. Enjoy while you can.

Uplink is 145.880, no PL
Downlink is 435.150 at about 1 watt

UPDATE:
The IHU crashes each eclipse, erasing the software needed to operate the repeater automatically. At this time the command team is turning the repeater on and off during some US passes, mainly in the afternoon, and only as available. The repeater is open to all when this happens. The uplink is now 145.880, and the downlink is 435.150. We are working on trying to automate this.

All,

We are having a difficult time trying to restore AO-51 to operation. Currently, the satellite will not retain the upload of the flight software across eclipse. The batteries are in very poor condition. We have a few more things to try, but with eclipses peaking around July at ~27 minutes, the long term situation is grim. There is a brief period around November where eclipses are as short as 16 minutes, but past that it is a long climb to 30 minutes or longer eclipses for many years. We have no expected "return to service" date. If you have 9k6 digital capability, you can listen in on our attempts at recovery on 435.150 on many passes over the US.

JOTA from Space

Astronaut and scout master Mike Fossum is planning to participate in JOTA from the International Space Station. His schedule is somewhat flexible on the weekends but will not be available for every pass.

The typical crew work periods are 0800-1930 UTC but they are sometimes available a bit later.

Check to see if the ISS will be passing over your area during that time period.

When available, Mike will be listening on the ITU Region 1 (Europe, Russia and Africa) uplink of 145.20 MHz and ITU regions 2 & 3 (everywhere else) will use the uplink of 144.49 MHz. He will be using the call sign NA1SS.

Worldwide downlink (where he transmits) is 145.80 MHz.

Team JOTA pada stasiun Induk Kwarnas YB0S mencoba melakukan kontak dengan dukungan dari Om Hakim-YB0AN , menggunakan Radio Kenwood TS-2000, melakukan beberapa kali CQ Jambore pada Uplink ..sampai JOTA selesai belum berhasil melakukan Kontak . Pada saat IIS melaintasi Indonesia hanya terdengar Beacon dari ISS saja.
